PRODUCT TESTING
Analysis of Hemp Variety Cannabis Sativa Products
WHY INCREDIBLE EDIBLES WANTS TESTING
The recent CT Senate Bill 893 that passed in January 2019, has made it paramount that we strive for an increase in public research on C. sativa. This legislative push has illuminated the lack of advancements that have been made by UConn and other public institutions, within CT and elsewhere.
With a Public/Private research partnership, we will be able to ameliorate our understanding of C. sativa, in facets of testing and research! By doing so, we also provide standards by which we can ensure the protection of C. sativa consumers, be their product hemp or MMJ.
Pushing for and providing stringent standards of testing and acceptability in product handling strengthens the industry as a whole and provides consumers with confidence. The overarching lack of standards that is currently seen is detrimental to the health and longevity of the industry, and it is the responsibility of institutions that are vested in the growth and continuance of the industry to make a change and provide to those watching an idea of 'what good looks like'.
After obtaining ISO 17025 certification and perfected analytical techniques, UConn will be able to become a public third-party testing location for C. sativa, while also facilitating future research by having pre-established protocols and analytical methods for chemical analysis.
TESTING PROPRIETARY CBD POWDER
The CBD oil we use is made into a proprietary powder product that is then used in food. We need to do proper testing on the powder to ensure that the CBD content of the powder is consistent with what we believe it should be and that the CBD content in the powder is stable over time..
TESTING FOOD PRODUCTS
Food products that will be made with the proprietary CBD powder that IE produces need to be able to ensure the delivery of specific quantities of CBD. This must mean that the CBD should be stable in these products, both immediately and over time. As such, these products need to undergo cannabinoid and perhaps terpene analysis to ensure a quality product is being delivered to consumers.
TESTING CBD HEMP-OIL EXTRACT
The CBD oil that we use is also known as full spectrum oil. This is because it is a cleaned hemp extract that contains various cannabinoids and terpenes, but could also contain various harmful residues concentrated from the plant, especially if it was grown poorly. This can include trace heavy metals (C. sativa is a good land remediator), mycotoxins from improperly handled flowers, and pesticides from improper growing techniques.
Why should we test products?
Incredible Edibles currently offers a single product, a proprietary powder, to consumers. However, this indirectly creates thousands of different variations, in the form of various food products. The powder is formulated from full spectrum CBD oil, a hemp-based extract that is dissolved in medium chain triglyceride oil.
To begin with the CBD oil, it is important, both by law and by being a quality brand, that the oil is tested for an array of criteria. This includes cannabinoid content, terpene content, heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, and residual solvents.
In order to ensure that our proprietary powder has consistent amounts of CBD, and that those quantities are stable over time, this requires testing of the powder for cannabinoid quantification.
Subsequent food products made with the powder include smoothies, chocolates, and dipped fruits. These such products should be delivering exact quantities of CBD to the consumer, and as such need to be tested to ensure the exact quantity being delivered to the individual.
